Photographer Marco Torres Walker has been taking photographs of the Eivissa Jazz Festival since 2000. During these years he has gathered a good photographic archive, and discovered thar concert photography, jazz in particular, is one of his favourites. One of the results of this work was the edition of the book ‘Eivissa Jazz. 25 anys” published by the Eivissa town council. The book, accompanied by a compilation CD of several themes from different editions of the festival, was a personal idea that he managed to carry out in 2013, just when the festival reached 25 years.
It seems risky to prepare the performance of a not stable group in a single rehearsal
It was during the edition of the book that he discovered some interesting details of the Eivissa Jazz Experience. He realised that nearly every time the musicians had never played together. This fact made him focus on the process they followed to achieve their objective. Above all, the rehearsal became interesting. It seemed risky to base the performance of a group on a single rehearsal. Seen from the outside, from the perspective of someone who is not a musician, it is more than risky to trust everything to one session of four or five hours. Even more so taking into account that most of those musicians have never played together.
Then other questions arose. How do they do it? What does it take to achieve that ability and security? Do they always get it right? What happens when things do not work correctly? How do they experience it? Do they have doubts? All these questions and more are what this documentary aims to answer. It is a chance to bring jazz to the general public. But it’s also an occasion for showing the world that something unique is happening in Ibiza. The Eivissa Jazz Festival. We must not forget the context in which the festival occurs. On the island, known for being one of the world centres of electronic music, a jazz festival takes place every summer. So it is interesting to show that, at the same time as clubs are animated by some of the most famous djs, a stage hosts national and international jazz figures. It is good to see how both demonstrations coexist.
