How to set up a jazz group in an afternoon

The plot

The Eivissa Jazz Experience is an ephemeral group, created with the unique intention of dying after a single performance

Ibiza Jazz the Experience is a documentary that aims to reveal the process whereby six  experienced musicians come together to achieve an ambitious goal. Assemble a jazz group in an afternoon and give just one, unrepeatable concert. This is the story of how a unique experience within Spanish jazz is planned and executed. The Eivissa Jazz Experience is an ephemeral group, created with the unique intention of dying after a single performance, at the heart of the Eivissa Jazz festival. 2016’s will be the 28th Edition of the Ibiza festival. The eighth edition of the Eivissa Jazz Experience will be in the program. At the head of the group, as in the seven previous editions, will be the Galician pianist Abe Rábade. Rábade is responsible for selecting the members of the group, who vary each year.

The rehearsal is the key to the process. It is where they are really put their ideas in common

They then prepare the repertoire with pieces by the musicians who make up the Experience that year, and everything comes together in just one rehearsal in Ibiza. The documentary will draw us into the daily life of these musicians. Their work and relationship with music, with jazz. We will see them in their environment. We will see them communicate by email and, of course, we will see how they get together for the first time in Ibiza, a few hours before the concert.

The rehearsal is the key to the process. It is where they really put their ideas in common. Their visions of what the concert should be and the dynamics of the group. Dynamics that only have a few hours to be born, develope and explode at the concert. Is it a success? Will they get what they are looking for? Will they be happy with the result? Will the public like it? They also have these doubts before stepping on stage. All must be resolved, at least in part, in the rehearsal. Five hours. That is the time that they will have to challenge each other and achieve a group. Find a harmony that leads the public to enjoy the concert. If the 2016 Experience succeeds it will be, once again, one of the best experiences of the festival.
